Built in just 410 days during the Great Depression, from its completion in 1930 this limestone tower was a point of pride among downtrodden New Yorkers in times of social and economic hardship. This iconic building has been featured in several movies including King Kong, Sleepless in Seattle, Elf, and The Amazing Spider-Man among others.

The Empire State’s tower lights are switched off on particularly foggy nights during the spring and autumn bird migration season to avoid confusing the flight path of the migrating birds. The building is struck by lightning an average of 100 times per year.

On a foggy day in 1945, a B-25 bomber crashed into the tower, killing 14 people and sending elevator operator Betty Lou Oliver plunging 75 stories inside an elevator. Betty survived the descent thanks to the lift's automatic brakes. Still today, this event holds the Guinness World Record for the longest survived elevator fall ever recorded.
